Quarterbacks Steven Sheffield (left) and Taylor Potts sat out much of the spring due to injuries, but both are set to battle for a starting job.

IRVING-Of the many topics surrounding the Texas Tech football program, the most talked about may be the quarterback battle going on between seniors Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield.

With the two coming off injuries suffered in the spring, head coach Tommy Tuberville said they simply need to regain their composure on the field.

“We've just got to get them to where their confidence is built up to the fact that, hey, no matter who they play against, they can play well and play consistently,” he said.

Sheffield went down first after reinjuring the foot he broke last. Potts injured his throwing hand the same week. The two were forced to sit out the remainder of spring practices and the spring game.

Potts entered the 2009-2010 campaign as the uncontested starter, with “Sticks” fighting just to keep his backup spot.

Fast forward a year later, and the two have about the same amount of experience after splitting time as the starter due to injury and inconsistent play.

“Both have played in the Big 12. They've both been starters in the Big 12. They've both been backups in the Big 12,” Tuberville said. “They've both been injured. They've won games. They've gone through some tough situations, and both can play.”

However, Tuberville says there will be no switching of the quarterbacks, preferring to stick to one true starter throughout the year.

“It's going to be tough. We'll make a decision,” he said. “We will not have rotating quarterbacks. I don't believe in having one guy go out one series and one the next. We won't do that.”

The Red Raiders open the season with SMU Sunday, September 5 at 2:30 p.m. in Jones AT&T Stadium.
