Although many students will be making the journey from Lubbock to their hometown for a Thanksgiving feast, several Tech and Lubbock organizations are preparing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for students and community members to enjoy.

The Baptist Student Ministry at Tech is conducting an International Thanksgiving dinner  at 6 p.m. Friday to introduce the holiday tradition to international students.
Amy Huff, an intern at the Baptist Student Ministry, said the group is hosting the dinner to do more to help the international students to understand American culture.

“They don’t normally have the opportunity to experience these things,” she said. “They’ve seen it on TV, but they haven’t experienced it.”

Huff said the organization is expecting about 100 to 150 international students to take part in the dinner.

According to information provided by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the group will be working as bell ringers for the Salvation Army and providing $1 drop boxes on campus in which every dollar donated will provide seven meals for families.

Lyn Garcia, director of development at the South Plains Food Bank, said the food bank will provide the food boxes they regularly provide on Thanksgiving for the community.

Texas Tech Hospitality Services also will provide a Thanksgiving feast to anyone on campus from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, said Alan Cushman, an employee with the department.

All-you-can-eat dining locations at Horn/Knapp, Hulen/Clement and Fresh Plate at Bledsoe/Gordon will provide a chef-inspired menu, he said.

“It’s a nice thing we can do to change up the everyday dining on campus,” Cushman said. “Also a way to tie the holidays into it.”

He said certified cooks will be in each location and Dewey McMurray will be the sous chef in charge of providing the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

The menu for each of the locations serving the dinner is oven-roasted turkey, spiral ham, roast sirloin of beef, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, corn, broccoli, rice and cheese, turkey gravy, hot rolls, pumpkin pie and pecan pie.

The Market at Stangel/Murdough also will be providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal that can be purchased at anytime during the day, Cushman said.

Andrew Ford, Alpha Tau Omega president, said the fraternity collected canned goods the last two weeks to donate to the South Plains Food Bank. Pledges in the fraternity performed songs and dances in front of sororities for canned donations.

Ford said at the end of the two weeks, the fraternity collected “truck loads” of canned goods for the South Plains Food Bank. The final tally numbered more than 2,000.
