Ten reported thefts from academic buildings in the last nine days have prompted the Texas Tech Police Department to advise students and staff to make sure their valuables are secured when they leave a room.

Col. Gordon Hoffman, deputy chief of the Tech Police Department, said it is difficult to catch people stealing others' property because it easily could be their own property.

"It's kind of just a matter of being more observant," Hoffman said.

The Tech Police Department has increased its patrols and it is attempting to gain more visibility to discourage these type of thefts, he said. But one of the best things it can do is to provide tips for students and staff.

Laptop computers, wallets and backpacks are among the most popular items that are stolen from academic buildings, he said.

In a TechAnnounce message, the Tech police asked students and faculty to secure all property when leaving a classroom and to report any suspicious activity to the department.

The police department provides free engraving of a driver's license number on laptops to track the laptop in case it is stolen.

For more information on keeping valuables safe from theft, the Tech police Web site has a tip sheet at www.depts.ttu.edu/ttpd.
