Mayoral candidates debate; analyze mistakes, look at future

Broadcasting to a live audience on Lubbock Independent School District's TV station, mayoral candidates David Miller and Tom Martin did their best to answer questions Monday evening at a debate sponsored by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. With incidences like the Chippendale's dancers getting arrested in Lubbock and visitors being harassed by security at the Lubbock International Airport gaining national media attention, candidates were asked how they would improve the national reputation of Lubbock.
Jake's Sports Café loses liquor license

Some Texas Tech students may be disappointed to find out they no longer can take part in a favorite pastime at a local hotspot and popular music venue. Scott Stephenson, owner of Jake's Sports Café, said his business lost its liquor license after serving three underage people on three different occasions: June 29, 2005; March 24, 2007; and June 16, 2007.
Burkhart center receives $500,000 grant

Tech's Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research received the Wagner-Peyser grant to fund a two-phase project for adults with autism. The $500,000 Wagner-Peyser grant was awarded to the Burkhart Center by Gov. Rick Perry's office through the Texas Workforce Commission, according to a university news release.
Tech authors give advice on writing novels

Texas Tech welcomed three accomplished authors to speak to students about the pitfalls and plus sides of writing a novel Monday in the College of Mass Communications. Tech students and faculty members received writing advice and industry critiques from Randy Black, Pete Brewton and Linda Francis Lee.
Tech police issue warning after thefts in academic buildings

Ten reported thefts from academic buildings in the last nine days have prompted the Texas Tech Police Department to advise students and staff to make sure their valuables are secured when they leave a room. Col. Gordon Hoffman, deputy chief of the Tech Police Department, said it is difficult to catch people stealing others' property because it easily could be their own property.
