Student government officials step down, swear in successors

Texas Tech's Student Government Association leaders swore in the next batch of executive officers and student senators at an emotionally charged banquet in downtown Lubbock Friday evening. Addressing an audience of prominent Lubbock personalities, including Lubbock Mayor David Miller and Tech President Jon Whitmore, the 2007-08 group of student leaders officially stepped down from their positions and offered words of encouragement and advice to the 2008-09 group of elected student representatives, whose terms begin today.
American Cancer Society to construct Hope Lodge in Lubbock

The American Cancer Society plans to build Hope Lodge Lubbock by 2010 as a refugee for cancer patients who travel more than 50 miles to receive treatment. Tamara Cannon, community development manager of the American Cancer Society in Lubbock, said the city was chosen because it is a large medical hub with a wide variety of services.
University officials: second test of emergency notification system a success

Texas Tech officials believe Thursday's test of the university's emergency notification system was successful despite reaching just less than 90 percent of recipients in the university's database. Sally Post, associate director of communications and marketing at the university, said of the more than 31,000 Tech students, faculty, staff and parents, just less than 90 percent received the test warning message through text message, e-mail or phone.

College basketball players are not the only athletes who get to participate in March Madness. The Texas Tech Kinesiology and Athletic Society sponsored its own March Madness, a four-week basketball program for fifth-graders from Parkway Academy and McWhorter Elementary that ended Thursday.
