Students can get their gangsta' on at Kappa Upsilon Chi's second annual Spring Bling party and concert, to be held at 9 p.m. Saturday at Old Town, located at 2402 Ave. J.
"The party's called 'Spring Bling,' so we encourage everybody to come out and dress like rappers," said David Stapp, vice president of Kappa Upsilon Chi.
Bahama Bucks will provide refreshments for the free event, said Rob Wilson, external vice president for the organization. And that's not all attendees will be treated to.
The free event also will include performances from hip-hop recording artists Tedashii and Trip Lee.
"It's going to be a dance party, and the rappers are just going to get up there and keep it going," said Rob Wilson, external vice president for the organization.
Tedashii and Trip Lee are members of the trio 116 Clique, with fellow rapper Lecrae. The group is slated to release an album later this year. Tedashii performed at Spring Bling last year, and all three artists have performed in Lubbock before.
"They're just really talented artists that choose to center their music on their faith in Jesus Christ," said Tim Sayles, chaplain for Kappa Upsilon Chi.
The artists will perform their own music, and possibly do some freestyle, Wilson said. Both the Dallas natives have a unique style, he said, and will be a welcome variation to the local music scene.
"They bring the word of God like a bunch of us in West Texas have never seen," he said.
Their unique style gives Tedashii and Trip Lee a unique way to witness, Sayles said, and allows them to be involved at the forefront of the hip hop movement.
"I think it's a challenge sometimes for Christians to integrate culture in our walk and to apply our faith to culture," he said.
Both Tadeshii and Trip Lee are able to find this balance, Sayles said, by applying their talents to what they believe in.
"They're really passionate about hip hop, they're really passionate about their faith," he said. "And they kind of connect those two."
This is an important part of every Christian's life, Sayles said. By incorporating artists like Tadeshii and Trip Lee at their events, Kappa Upsilon Chi is able to promote that same cause.
"Doing a party like this is a way to relate what's popular in culture to our faith in Christ," Sayles said.
