The newest members of the Texas Tech Phi Beta Kappa chapter will be inducted in a ceremony at 4 p.m. today in the Student Union Building Allen Theatre.

Allison Blakely, national Phi Beta Kappa president, will speak at the ceremony, according to a university news release. Blakely is a professor of European and comparative history and the professor of African American studies at Boston University. He also is a visiting scholar at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University.

Health Sciences Center President John Baldwin, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and Tech Chancellor Kent Hance also will speak briefly at the induction, which will be followed by a ceremony in the Student Union Ballroom, according to the release.

Mary Jane Hurst, president of the Tech chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, said she expects long-term success from the inductees.

"In general, we look for students who challenge themselves," she said.

The organization looks not only for the best GPAs when selecting members, Hurst said, but also for students who work outside of their comfort zone - such as taking honors classes or studying abroad - and still succeed.

Hurst said all students and faculty are welcomed and encouraged to attend the event.

Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest undergraduate honors organization in the United States, was established in 1776, according to the release. The Tech chapter, established in 2006, is one of three chapters granted to a public university in Texas.
