Texas Tech football supporters who turn on the radio this season have a new anthem.
Dusty Slaughter, a sophomore music business major from Levelland, recorded his own version of Soulja Boy's single, renaming it "Crank that Crabtree," in support of Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree. The song, which started off as fans supporting the Red Raiders, has gained popularity throughout Lubbock after receiving airtime on local radio stations.
Slaughter said the idea for the song came from putting two popular acts together.
"I'm a big fan of Michael Crabtree (and) Tech in general," he said. "I knew that Soulja Boy song was huge right now, (and) Michael Crabtree is huge right now, so we decided to do something and put it together, and it just blew up. I don't know, it's pretty crazy."
Slaughter shot the video for the song on the Tech campus Friday, in front of the seal on University Avenue and near Jones AT&T Stadium. Participants in the video included Braxton Maxwell, Tahquille Maxwell and Coleman Maxwell, who choreographed the dance for the "Crank that Crabtree" song.
Coleman Maxwell, a sophomore exercise and sports science major from Lamesa, said he hopes this can be something Tech is known for in the years to come.
"When I first heard it, I was just ecstatic about it, just because it's just another way to put Texas Tech on the map," he said. "A&M (has) a lot of tradition, UT (has) a lot of tradition, and we want to continue to expand the Texas Tech tradition by just making a real crunk song that everybody (will) know, even people outside of Lubbock."
Jody Slaughter, a senior from Levelland, said the popularity of the song was a surprise to him.
"I haven't heard one person say anything bad about it," he said. "(Dusty Slaughter) sent it to me, and I just e-mailed to a couple of AM sports talk radio stations, just thinking they might play it or something. The next thing you know, they're playing it every commercial break. Z-102 hears it. It just kind of spiraled out of control pretty quick."
Dusty Slaughter is a part of a Christian Rap group called Clean Addiction. Other songs he is involved with include "Fast Slow", "No Rain No Rainbow" and "School Shooting." The group plans to release an album in spring 2008.
Dusty Slaughter said he has not had the chance to get Crabtree's opinion on the song, but a critique from another Tech football player may warrant another song to be released soon.
"I've talked to Graham Harrell about it," he said. "Graham said he liked it. He's waiting for his to come out. (It's) called 'Take 'em to the Graham-ys.'"
