Texas Tech volleyball is gearing up for next season as it hosts the Texas Tech Spring Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the United Spirit Arena.
According to a press release, the teams competing against the Red Raiders include Lubbock Christian, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State and Angelo State.
Tech sixth-year coach Nancy Todd enters the season with 12 returning players from last year's unit. Leading the team into 2008 will be Jenn Harrell and Brandi Hood. Harrell averaged 3.89 digs per game while Hood cranked out .92 blocks per game to go along with her 1.96 kills per game. Outside hitter Michelle Flores returns for the Red Raiders after leading the team last season with 300 total kills.
Tech will play a total of five matches Saturday starting with LCU. The Lady Chaps completed the 2007 season with a 30-8 record and a Sooner Athletic Conference championship. The Red Raiders then go head-to-head against the ACU Wildcats, who are coming off a 15-14 season under sophomore coach Kellen Mock.
Afterward, Tech competes against Angelo State at 12:30 p.m. and Tarleton State at 2:30. Both teams finished below .500 last season with records of 6-21 and 13-16, respectively.
Ending the tournament will be a match against Wayland Baptist, led by coach Jim Giacomazzi. Under Giacomazzi, the Pioneers had a 23-17 record and their best season in eight years.
Tech volleyball begins play at 9 a.m. Saturday against LCU. Admission is free to the public.
